Join us for an enriching workshop focused on crafting exquisite spring garden rose centerpieces. This immersive experience will allow you to harvest garden roses at their peak bloom and create your own stunning centerpiece arrangement.
The day kicks off with a guided tour of our breathtaking rose fields, led by Felicia Alvarez, the founder and farmer at Menagerie Farm & Flower. You'll have the opportunity to admire the roses in their full spring glory. In the morning sessions, Felicia will share her expertise, demonstrating effective harvesting techniques and how to prepare roses for optimal vase life. This interactive class encourages hands-on learning, as you'll be invited to harvest your own roses alongside Felicia from our production field.
Next, Natalie Bowen, floral designer & founder at Natalie Bowen Designs, will showcase the art of crafting a beautiful floral centerpiece, integrating fresh garden roses with locally sourced spring flowers and greens. She will provide insights on creating a harmonious color palette and selecting blooms inspired by the organic compositions of nature. With Natalie's guidance, you'll learn to make simple yet meaningful arrangement that highlights the beauty of garden roses and in-season spring blooms.
Midday we'll break, to enjoy a delightful farm-to-table lunch with fellow participants. In the afternoon, you'll create your own spring rose centerpiece, with Natalie leading you step-by-step through the process. Your centerpiece creation will be captured on film by Ashley Noelle Edwards, of Ashley Noelle Edwards Photography, and you'll have a digital photo keepsake (delivered to you after the workshop) for you to remember your day among the roses. INCLUDED WITH YOUR TICKET: This workshop includes refreshments & light snacks throughout the day, along with a farm-to-table lunch. All necessary materials for harvesting roses, including clippers, gloves, and floral processing supplies/vase, will be supplied. Participants will also receive a printed, guide on Creating Spring Rose Centerpieces. Additionally, you’ll take home your floral centerpiece you created and digital photos of you and your floral centerpiece delivered to you after the event.

SUPPLIES: While we do provide all supplies needed for the class, we find many folks prefer the comfort of using equipment they are familiar with. (It's not so fun to harvest with a pair of gloves that doesn't "fit like a glove"😉.) We welcome you to bring your own worn-in gloves and clippers with you, if you have them, so you can practice with the tools you use at home. If you’re looking for new gloves, our favorite is the Bionic Rose Leather Gloves. You can order them from Amazon or purchase a pair from our nursery when you arrive at the farm.
WHAT'S COVERED: The workshop includes sessions include: techniques for harvesting roses, post-harvest care for cut roses, choosing rose blooms inspired by nature's organic compositions and instruction on how to craft a rose floral centerpiece creating a harmonious color palette.
While we would love to cover every aspect of rose cultivation and floral design in just one day, it would be a challenge to fit it all in. Instead, Felicia & Natalie have curated a program of sessions to get you get off to a successful start designing with garden roses. Please be aware that this workshop does NOT include topics related to rose growing or cultivation, pricing roses/flowers for sale, shipping flowers, insect & disease management, advanced botany or entomology, soil health & amendments, irrigation & water management, dormant rose pruning, winterizing techniques, landscape/field design plans, cultivation in hoophouses and greenhouses, chemical applications or safety training, growing annual flowers or bulbs, marketing strategies or, business/ farm planning.
WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES: This is an interactive class that takes place in our commercial rose production field. You will be walking over uneven and possibly dusty, muddy terrain. For the hands-on portion of the workshop, standing and bending are required to harvest & process the roses and create your centerpiece. If you require any accommodations for activities or have questions about the physical activity requirements, please contact us PRIOR TO PURCHASING your ticket.
EVERYTHING ELSE YOU NEED TO KNOW: Workshop attendees must be over the age of 18 years of age. In case of severe weather or other act of God the workshop may be rescheduled or canceled. Natalie Bowen Brookshire is a versatile floral designer, educator, and third-generation arranger acclaimed for her organic floral designs and innovative arranging principles. Her creative spark ignites when she cultivates artistic bonds, with her distinctive floral approach revolving around fostering community connections. Natalie's floral journey began at the tender age of 8 when she hosted her inaugural floral gathering, a passion she has nurtured ever since. Spending two decades honing her craft in San Francisco, specializing in weddings and events, she has now returned to her roots in Chico, learning the art of cultivating her own roses.
Felicia Alvarez is the founder of Menagerie Farm & Flower, a farm and nursery dedicated to cultivating garden roses, specialty flowers, French prunes, a variety of stone fruits, nuts, and rice across more than 100 acres of picturesque California farmland. As a third-generation farmer and entrepreneur, she brings over two decades of farming experience to her students.
Felicia’s sustainable farming practices embody a holistic approach to cultivating a vibrant small-scale farm. Through educational outreach, she passionately shares her love for nature, art, science, and farming, inspiring both novice and seasoned gardeners and farmers worldwide. Her greatest joy comes from helping others discover simple ways to integrate food and flowers into their homes & gardens.
She studied Crop Science and Agricultural Business at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, has been featured in Sunset Magazine, Slow Flowers Journal, Style Me Pretty, Team Flower, and the First Lady’s Luncheon, to name a few, and serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for Certified American Grown Flowers. Her first book,Growing Wonder: A Flower Farmer’s Guide to Roses, was released in March 2022. She enjoys spending time on the farm with her husband and two young sons.
Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is the closest airport, located about a one-hour drive south of the farm.
Please note that lodging and transportation to and from Menagerie Farm & Flower are not included with your ticket. The nearest accommodations can be found in Yuba City, California, where several local hotels and B&Bs are available. If you're open to a longer drive, more options are located in the greater Sacramento, Chico, or Roseville areas, though these will be approximately an hour's journey to the farm. For your convenience, we can provide a list of local lodging options upon request before you purchase your ticket.
