Preparing For Launch Day

With hundreds of excited gardeners all over the country, many of our popular bare root rose varieties sell out quickly. Use these tips for the best chance at snagging the roses on your wishlist:

Create an account on our website and fill in personal details before launch day. Click here to watch a video tutorial.

Create a wishlist on our website prior to the launch so that you can easily add roses to your cart. Learn how to create, edit, & save your wishlist in this video tutorial.

Make sure you have a stable internet connection. The higher the speed, the better!

If available, opt for using your desktop or laptop computer over your phone. This is, of course, a personal preference; however, we find it easier to navigate on a larger screen.

Get ready to shop a few minutes before the sale launches. Refresh the page right at launch time.

Have your credit card in hand! Unfortunately you will not be able to save your credit card information to your Menagerie account, but you can save a card to your ShopPay, Amazon Pay, Google Pay or Meta Pay accounts and use any one of those services at checkout to pay for your order.

Complete the checkout process as quickly as possible. Items are not held in your cart and are only yours once payment is made and the purchase is confirmed.

If you missed some roses on your list on launch day, don't fret! Varieties labeled “OUT OF STOCK" are currently sold out but may be back in stock during the 2023 season. We update inventory weekly and additional stock may be added. Use the "Notify Me When Available" feature on each product page so you are the first to be notified when a variety is back in stock. You can choose an email, SMS (text) or both to receive notifications. Watch a quick video to learn how to set up a restock notification!

As of September 2022, we have a brand new website! For security reasons, any stored credit cards, personal account information and passwords from our old website did not transfer over to our new one. We recommend you take the time to create an account on the website with us so you can easily login and check out quickly. Click here to watch a quick video on how to create an account!

We are excited to share that our website now has a wishlist feature! We highly recommend creating your wishlist prior to launch day to ensure a speedy checkout. Watch a quick tutorial video here.

To add a bare root rose variety to your wishlist, simply click the "Add to Wishlist" button on the desired product page. View your wishlist by clicking on the "Wishlist" tab on the right side of your screen.

Make sure to save your wishlist so that it is easily accessible come launch day. We recommend creating an account on our website to save your wishlist. If you do not have an account with us, click the envelope icon at the top of your wishlist to send it to your email address.

Products are removed from our inventory as purchases are completed, not as they are added to your shopping cart. We recommend having your wishlist ready so that you are able to check out as quickly as possible.

Gift card recipients and those with store credit can enter their unique code received by email on the Order Summary page at checkout and click “Apply” to subtract the gift card value from your order total. Click here to watch a video tutorial.

We will not be able to apply gift card or store credit codes retroactively after you submit your order.

Please make sure to enter your code at checkout if you have one.

Choosing Varieties To Order

Enter your zip code here to find your growing zone.

Zones 9-13: late January - late February

Zone 8: mid - late February

Zone 7: early - mid March

Zone 6: mid - late March

Zones 3-5: early - mid April

You can select your preferred ship week at checkout. Shipping windows listed here are recommendations only. Your individual growing conditions may require a different ship date than what is listed - for example if you grow in a greenhouse or other enclosed structure, or are experiencing seasonal weather that is out of the norm for your location. This is only a general guide.

To protect and maintain the quality of our roses, we may change your chosen ship date due to weather or other transportation issues that may arise to ensure the roses arrive in the best condition. If we need to make a change to your ship date selection, you will be notified by email in advance.

The grade of the rose is the size of the rose when it is harvested from the growing field. The grades reflect the number of canes a rose must have, the size of the canes, and where the measurements to size them are taken. Choosing a grade really depends on your budget and personal preference.

Grafted Grade 1 roses are the top grade. They have three canes branched no higher than 3 inches above the bud graft and measure at least 5/16 inch in diameter. Grade 1 will be the most hardy plant because it has more canes. Grade 1 roses are the most expensive; prices decrease by grade accordingly.

Grafted Grade 1.5 roses are one step down. A grade 1.5 rose has at least two strong canes and measures at least 5/16 inch in diameter.

Grafted Grade 2 roses are the smallest grade. They have one 5/16-inch cane and at least one at 1/4 inch.

Own Root Roses are graded using standards from a different grading category than grafted. They are graded as deciduous shrubs and may have canes that are smaller in diameter than their grafted rose cousins of the same Grade.

Learn more about grade selection in ourblog post!

Grafted roses, also called budded roses, are roses that have a top stock variety and a bottom stock variety. The shoots, aka canes, that grow above the ground are a different variety than the roots that grow below ground. The top stock is “grafted” or attached to the bottom stock so they grow together as one plant. Why is this done? The bottom stock variety is grafted to the top stock to make the rose hardier and more healthy. Bottom stock is selected to help the rose have improved hardiness, disease resistance, and resistance to adverse weather conditions.

Own root roses are roses grown from a single variety cutting that develops its own root system. Unlike grafted roses, both their roots and shoots/canes come from the same variety of plant.

To learn more, check out our blog post Grafted vs. Own Root Bare Root Roses.

Not all roses are available as own root and grafted. All available stock of own root or grafted will be listed on collection launch day. Our website displays rootstock selections for clarity to the purchaser.

To learn more, check out our blog post Grafted vs. Own Root Bare Root Roses.

There is no one type that is “better” than the other. Both own root and grafted will grow beautiful hardy roses. It’s important not to focus only on the rootstock when selecting your rose as there will always be exceptions to any best practices. If you purchase from a reputable nursery, like ours, and they offer a selection of roses as own root or grafted there is usually a reason why they offer certain varieties as own root and certain varieties as grafted. Some roses do not perform well on their own root and some do. Some are ok either way. We have already done the hard work for you by providing a rootstock option that is best for that variety. Grafted roses can have a long lifespan if properly cared for. (and will certainly have a longer lifespan than if they are a variety that doesn’t grow well on its own roots) Own roots are usually very hardy in cooler climates however this is where it’s important not to just look at the rootstock and consider the other attributes of the plant like the zone rating. An own root plant rated to zone 7 will likely not be very hardy if planted in a zone 4. So select any variety and rootstocks you’d like taking all factors beyond rootstock into consideration and you’ll be on your way to a beautiful rose garden come spring!

Zone 3-5 Special Considerations: You can grow grafted roses successfully in zones 3-5, but it does require more winter protection and care to ensure the top stock variety does not dieback in cold winter weather and stays viable for the following year. If you’re new to growing roses in zones 3-5 and not sure how a grafted rose will do in your winter weather, we recommend buying one or two and trying them out for a season to see how they perform in your climate and location over a winter. If you don’t want to take a gamble on grafted, we recommend sticking to own root roses as you get your feet wet so your rose growing experience gets off to a good start.

We offer Dr. Huey and Multiflora rootstock. We select the rootstock that is optimal for the top stock variety for vigor and hardiness.

Unfortunately, once your order is placed we are not able to process any changes. If you would like to order additional items you will need to place another order.

We ARE NOT able to combine multiple orders or refund shipping fees for separate orders. Due to our fulfillment process, once an order is placed it goes immediately into processing. Please keep this in mind as you plan your wishlist and ship date.

Due to high demand, popularity and limited production of some of the roses in our collection we are limiting select varieties to 3 roses per person.

If a rose is labeled with a quantity limit on this product page just below the price and you add more than 3 to your cart you will see a pop-up window appear asking you to remove the additional roses from your cart. You will not be able to check out until you decrease your quantity to less than 3 for that variety.

→CLICK HERE to watch a video tutorial on how to purchase a product with a quantity limits.

We appreciate your respect of these quantity limits so more rose lovers across the United States can welcome these beautiful roses into their gardens. Thank you!
