Does winter rose pruning seem like a daunting task? With our 5 simple steps, Felicia will have you pruning like a pro in no time! Join us at the farm for this hands on experience and learn how to get your roses ready for their winter nap. No prior gardening experience is needed. We’ll make you feel right at home with the clippers.
Join us and learn how to get your roses ready for their winter nap. At this workshop on the farm you’ll learn how to properly prune a rose for winter. Students will enjoy a tour of our rose fields led by Felicia Alvarez, founder & farmer of Menagerie Farm & Flower, where you’ll get to see the rose plants during their dormant rest. Felicia will demonstrate her techniques, tips and tricks to prune roses, how to clean & prep the beds and you will get in on the action too by pruning one or two yourself. She will also cover pest and disease management techniques for the winter and do a quick demonstration on how to plant a bare root rose. Plus you’ll receive a bare root rose to take home and plant in your garden.
The workshop will be held at Menagerie Farm & Flower in Live Oak, California (95953) in the Sacramento Valley. This IS NOT an online workshop. No prior gardening experience is needed. We’ll make you feel right at home with the clippers. It’s the perfect way to learn how to get your roses in shape for bountiful blooms in the spring. So grab your friends and enjoy a nice morning of exploring and learning on the farm.
Felicia Alvarez founded Menagerie Farm & Flower specializing in garden roses, specialty flowers, French prunes, assorted stone fruits, nuts and rice on over 100 acres of beautiful California farmland. She is a third generation farmer and entrepreneur who has been farming for over two decades.
Felicia’s sustainable farming practices are an all-inclusive approach to creating a healthy small scale farm. Felicia shares her passion for nature, art, science and farming with educational outreach - teaching her love of the land to both beginning & experienced gardeners and farmers from across the country. Helping others learn simple ways to bring food & flowers together in their home is her greatest joy.
She studied Crop Science & Agricultural Business at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, has been featured in the Sunset Magazine, Slow Flowers Journal, Style Me Pretty, Team Flower, the First Lady’s Luncheon to name a few and serves on the Board of Directors for Certified American Grown Flowers. Her first book, Growing Wonder: A Flower Farmer’s Guide to Roses was released in March 2022. She enjoys spending time on the farm with her husband and two young sons.
The workshop will run from 9am-11am on Saturday, February 3, 2024.
