Does winter rose pruning seem like a daunting task? With her 5 simple step method, Felicia will have you pruning roses like a pro in no time! Join us at the farm for this hands-on experience (yes, you'll get to prune roses in our cut garden rose production field!) and learn how to prepare your roses for their winter nap. No prior gardening experience is needed. We’ll make you feel right at home with the clippers.
Join us and learn how to prepare your roses for their winter nap. In this workshop on the farm, you’ll discover how to properly dormant prune a garden rose. The day will begin with a tour of our rose fields led by Felicia Alvarez, founder and farmer at Menagerie Farm & Flower, where you’ll see the rose plants during their dormant rest. This is an interactive class where you get to learn by doing alongside Felicia in our rose production field. Felicia will demonstrate her simple 5 step method for pruning roses, show you how to clean and prep the beds and review post pruning care to prevent diseases & pests. In addition, you'll have the chance to prune a few roses yourself. Plus, you’ll receive a bare root rose to take home and plant in your garden.
No prior gardening or pruning experience is needed; we’ll make you feel right at home with the clippers. This workshop is perfect for gardeners and flower farmers that want to learn a full proof simple 5 step technique for dormant pruning their garden roses in 10 minutes or less. INCLUDED WITH YOUR TICKET: This workshop includes light morning refreshments. The use of all materials needed for pruning roses, including clippers, saws, loppers and gloves. A printed step by step Dormant Rose Pruning Guide. Plus, you’ll receive a bare root rose as our gift to you to take home and plant!
PRICING: Workshop prices will increase from early bird pricing on January 1, 2025. Early bird ticket: $139.97 per person; standard ticket: $179.97 per person.
LOCATION: The workshop will be held at Menagerie Farm & Flower in Live Oak, California (95953) in the Sacramento Valley. (This is NOT an online workshop.) Exact farm address and additional travel information will be provided after ticket purchase.
SUPPLIES: While we do provide all supplies needed for the class, we find many folks prefer the comfort of using equipment they are familiar with. (It's not so fun to prune with a pair of gloves that doesn't "fit like a glove"😉.) We encourage you to bring your own worn-in gloves and clippers with you, if you have them, so you can practice with the tools you use at home. If you’re looking for new gloves, our favorite is the Bionic Rose Leather Gloves. You can order them from Amazon or purchase a pair from our nursery when you arrive at the farm.
WHAT'S COVERED: The pruning demonstration and instruction will cover hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas and English roses. Climbing roses are NOT included in this workshop demonstration however you are welcome to ask Felicia any questions you have about pruning climbers during the Q & A Session.
WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES: This is an interactive class that takes place in our commercial rose production field. You will be walking over uneven and possibly muddy terrain. For the hands-on portion of the workshop, standing and bending are required to prune roses. If you require any accommodations for activities or have questions about the physical activity requirements, please contact us PRIOR TO PURCHASING your ticket.
EVERYTHING ELSE YOU NEED TO KNOW: Workshop attendees must be over the age of 18 years of age. In case of severe weather or other act of God the workshop may be rescheduled or canceled. No pets are permitted on the farm & nursery property.Your online email receipt will serve as your workshop ticket, and additional details, including the farm address, will be emailed to you prior to the workshop.

Felicia Alvarez is the founder of Menagerie Farm & Flower, a farm and nursery dedicated to cultivating garden roses, specialty flowers, French prunes, a variety of stone fruits, nuts, and rice across more than 100 acres of picturesque California farmland. As a third-generation farmer and entrepreneur, she brings over two decades of farming experience to her students.
Felicia’s sustainable farming practices embody a holistic approach to cultivating a vibrant small-scale farm. Through educational outreach, she passionately shares her love for nature, art, science, and farming, inspiring both novice and seasoned gardeners and farmers worldwide. Her greatest joy comes from helping others discover simple ways to integrate food and flowers into their homes & gardens.
She studied Crop Science and Agricultural Business at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, has been featured in Sunset Magazine, Slow Flowers Journal, Style Me Pretty, Team Flower, and the First Lady’s Luncheon, to name a few, and serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for Certified American Grown Flowers. Her first book,Growing Wonder: A Flower Farmer’s Guide to Roses, was released in March 2022. She enjoys spending time on the farm with her husband and two young sons.
Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is the closest airport, located about a one-hour drive south of the farm.
Please note that lodging and transportation to and from Menagerie Farm & Flower are not included with your ticket. The nearest accommodations can be found in Yuba City, California, where several local hotels and B&Bs are available. If you're open to a longer drive, more options are located in the greater Sacramento, Chico, or Roseville areas, though these will be approximately an hour's journey to the farm. For your convenience, we can provide a list of local lodging options upon request before you purchase your ticket. Feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions about travel planning prior to your ticket purchase.
