Q: Hi Felicia, I’m a big fan of Menagerie Farm roses and an even bigger fan of the Sunday Stem. Are there any plants that you feel are reliable companions for deterring insects? I planted chives and they didn’t deter the green aphids that covered all of the buds and new leafy growth on the roses in the springtime. Thanks so much.

A: Hi Lisa, thank you for your kind words about our roses and the Sunday Stem—it means so much to hear that you're enjoying them!

When it comes to companion planting for deterring insects, there are a few reliable plants to consider. While chives are a good companion for many plants, they're not always strong enough to fend off persistent pests like aphids. Instead, try incorporating:
  1. Marigolds: Their strong scent can repel aphids and other pests, plus they add a lovely pop of color.
  2. Lavender: A fragrant favorite that deters aphids and attracts beneficial pollinators like bees.
  3. Garlic or Allium species: Their sulfur compounds help deter aphids and some fungal diseases.
  4. Nasturtiums: They act as a "trap crop," luring aphids away from roses while providing a cheerful display.
  5. Mint: While best grown in containers to prevent spreading, mint can help repel pests with its potent aroma.
You might also try encouraging natural predators like ladybugs and lacewings by planting dill, fennel or yarrow nearby. Let me know how these suggestions work for you next season!
