Learn how to create a lush + airy hand-gathered bouquet design on a private rose farm in the bucolic Sacramento Valley of California.
Immerse yourself in the invigorating magic of the shifting seasons as late summer simmers into early fall, when the flowers are flushed with seasonal color and vigor, and when a grounding sensation rises from the warm flower fields as they sift the new cool evening air. Join us in this poetic time of year for a lush and airy hand-gathered bouquet design workshop, full of fresh seasonal flowers and garden roses from Menagerie Farm and Flower, with featured designer and instructor Jen Lagedrost Cavender of Nectar + Bloom.
Our luxury workshop is located in Live Oak (95953) the beautiful Sacramento Valley of California at Menagerie Farm & Flower, a private garden rose and fruit farm. With a limited number of seats available, we know you will develop intimate friendships with your fellow attendees and have exclusive one on one access to the presenters Felicia & Jen. This workshop was created to not only give you the hands-on education that only an on-farm educational experience can, but it is designed for you to connect with fellow attendees in an intimate learning environment where friends become like family.
During the workshop, Jen will guide you through two holistic and poetically-spirited bouquet design sessions, where you will learn her compositional approach to floral design and her favorite techniques for crafting lush and airy hand-gathered bouquets with intention and confidence. You will learn how to craft and create two bouquets, one a full bridal bouquet, and the second a smaller maiden bouquet or market wrap, allowing you to practice the techniques and diversify your skills. You will also learn Jen’s favorite methods for how to develop a harmonious color palette as well as how to select blooms for a recipe inspired by the organic compositions of nature all around you. Jen is passionate about translating the artistic cues of nature to compose meaningful experiences in the language of flowers, and she will guide you in incorporating this nature-inspired approach into your design work.
Our day will be captured by the amazing Ashley Noelle Edwards Photography so you’ll have a wonderful visual collection of memories from your time at the farm. Please send us a message if you have any questions about this one of a kind experience. So what are you waiting for? Get your ticket today. We’d love to have you join us!
Jen is a published poet and former professor of English, Literature, and Creative Writing. She started her floral design studio Nectar + Bloom, where she creates poetic floral designs and teaches holistic floristry, quite unexpectedly. Despite having grown up on an organic produce farm in the Midwest, where Jen and her sister grew their own flowers and arranged bouquets to sell at their parents’ farmers market stand throughout their childhood summers, Jen never could have imagined in a million years that this foundation in flowers, in the soil, and on an expanse of land blessed and battered by the relentless beauty of the seasons, would come full circle for her.
After moving to San Diego for college, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in English, Jen sought unique jobs in inspiring landscapes around the world where she could write while funding her travels, including working as a ranch hand in the mountains of Wyoming and as a barista in Queenstown, New Zealand. She continued to collect inspiration from the expanses of nature and its incredible cycles and beauty all the way through her graduate studies in Creative Writing and Poetry back in San Diego a few years later.
After completing her Master’s Degree, and in the midst of teaching her last two semesters of English at the university, Jen discovered floral design while she and her husband Carr were hiring vendors for their wedding. For Jen, it was as though a secret doorway to a deeply longed for opportunity to draw together everything she loved most had just burst open.
In starting her own floral design studio, Jen could return to flowers and to creating with her hands, and it gave her work as an artist that engaged her entrepreneurial spirit, applied the frameworks of composition from her academic studies, and also allowed her to return to her love of teaching. This kind of transformative culmination is what Jen loves to support most when teaching and guiding her student designers and mentees.
Jen is a certified yoga teacher, reiki practitioner, and student of Ayurveda. She is also a former collegiate cross country runner and is passionate about incorporating healing, health, and wellbeing into her approach to floristry as a business and field of creative work.
As a writer, artist, and educator, Jen teaches workshops in floral design from her studio, in destination locations on flower farms or near inspiring natural spaces around the world, and online in her Nectar Online Studio courses and Poetry of Flowers educational floristry membership. Her studio is based in San Diego, California.
Felicia Alvarez founded Menagerie Farm & Flower specializing in garden roses, specialty flowers, French prunes, assorted stone fruits, nuts and rice on over 100 acres of beautiful California farmland. She is a third generation farmer and entrepreneur who has been farming for over two decades.
Felicia’s sustainable farming practices are an all-inclusive approach to creating a healthy small scale farm. Felicia shares her passion for nature, art, science and farming with educational outreach - teaching her love of the land to both beginning & experienced gardeners and farmers from across the country. Helping others learn simple ways to bring food & flowers together in their home is her greatest joy.
She studied Crop Science & Agricultural Business at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, has been featured in the Sunset Magazine, Slow Flowers Journal, Style Me Pretty, Team Flower, the First Lady’s Luncheon to name a few and serves on the Board of Directors for Certified American Grown Flowers. Her first book, Growing Wonder: A Flower Farmer’s Guide to Roses was released in March 2022. She enjoys spending time on the farm with her husband and two young sons.
The workshop will run from 9am-3pm on Saturday, September 9, 2023.
